Additional Info
"Members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra are in Cuba for the second time in a year, this time to distribute a planeload of instruments to promising young musicians at four Havana schools. The Horns for Havana project grew out of a much higher profile visit to Cuba last year that was headlined by Jazz at Lincoln Center legend Wynton Marsalis. Carlos Henriquez, a composer and arranger for the New York-based troupe who organized the project, said Wednesday that he and other musicians on the earlier trip were deeply affected by the talented young musicians they met but disturbed by their lack of good instruments. Many of the youths had broken or worn-out instruments, including guitars without strings, trumpets without valves and violins with cracked wood. This timed, Henriquez and other musicians brought enough equipment for four complete acoustic jazz orchestras. They valued the instruments at $250,000. "We are here for the kids," Henriquez said."

Organization demands stop to Human Rights Abuses in Cuba

Date
August 31, 2011
Time
12:00 am All Day
Location
Washington, D.C.
United States
Additional Info
"Washington, D.C—The attacks and detention of human rights activists in Cuba—including members of the Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White), a group of human rights defenders honored by Human Right First in 2006 —should stop immediately and those detained should be released, said Human Rights First today. According to reports, members of Damas de Blanco are among the human rights defenders in Cuba who have been targeted in recent weeks by the authorities, and some have been beaten. “This most recent spate of harassing and intimidating activists has been going on for some weeks now, and dozens remain in detention,” said Human Rights First’s Brian Dooley. “For the last month, the Ladies in White have been prevented from carrying out their weekly peaceful protest. These brave women have been targeted and physically assaulted by police as they go to and from Mass. We urge that the arrests and violence directed against peaceful human rights activists be halted immediately.” The Ladies in White trace their roots back to 2003, when the Cuban government arrested and summarily tried and sentenced 75 human rights defenders, independent journalists and librarians to terms of up to 28 years in prison. Many of them were organizers for the Varela Project, a grassroots initiative for constitutional reform. The repressive move was roundly condemned by foreign governments, the United Nations and human rights organizations. Following the arrests, the wives and relatives of those imprisoned in the crackdown formed the Ladies in White. The last of the 75 dissidents was finally released in May 2011. The Ladies in White and other supporters—Ladies in Support—continue to peacefully protest for the release of others who they believe have been imprisoned due to their dissident activities. The groups recently spread their peaceful protests to eastern provinces."

Taste of Cuba as Salsa Celtica head for Peebles

"Salsa Celtica’s one-of-a-kind synthesis of Scottish and Irish traditional music with Latin American elements has taken them all over the world. They have topped the New York and LA music charts and the European world music charts, appearing at major Celtic, jazz and salsa festivals and starring as themselves in a feature film. Borders audiences will have a chance to see them in concert at the Eastgate Theatre, Peebles, next Friday, June 17. The roots of Salsa Celtica are in the mid-90s when they emerged alongside artists such as Shooglenifty and Martyn Bennett in the clubs and bars of Edinburgh and Glasgow. After they recorded their first album, Monstrous y Demonios, (Monsters and Demons), the band made a musical pilgrimage to Cuba, hanging out with some of the world’s top salsa bands. They then released The Great Scottish Latin Adventure, a synthesis of the new experiences and skills the Cuban tour had given them. This led to invitations to tour the salsa communities of the US, including performance in front of 5,000 ecstatic New Yorkers, which made them a major force on the world music scene. Since then, the band has continued to develop its unique, eclectic style. The line-up in Peebles will be stripped down to a smaller, acoustic format called The Small Island Sessions. The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £15"

"The summer’s visual art exhibit in the Helen T. White Galleries, Cuba & Beyond, draws on the complex and rich cultural history of the artists who consider Cuba their homeland. In the wake of the 1959 revolution, Cuba has become a moveable nation resulting from continuous out-migrations and scatterings. While focus tends to be on Cuba’s revolution and its resulting political regime as the impetus for emigration, this pattern of migration to and from the island traces back over centuries, as witnessed by the slave trade and Spanish colonization. Cuba has never been a fixed cultural, political, or geographical entity. Because of its strategic location, the island became a site of convergence, a point of migratory interaction and a location for all manner of cultural exchange, some of which pre-date the first Spanish colonial interventions. Therefore, when speaking of present-day Cubans, one is referring to the rich, cultural tapestry of those who reside on the island, as well as to a disparate population that has spread across the globe and now includes three generations born outside Cuba since 1959. Cuba & Beyond consists of four separate exhibits that incorporate the idea that the island and its definition of nationhood and culture extend beyond its geographical coordinates."
