Leaders

For almost a half of a century, Cuba has been governed by a totalitarian dictatorship that has systematically violated the civil liberties and fundamental rights of the Cuban people. Despite constant harassment from the regime, Cuba’s democratic leadership continues to grow, both in and outside of the island, rooted in the basic values and principles of democracy, such as personal freedom, mutual respect, and human rights. These leaders build on their country’s democratic foundations, inspired in that nation’s republican history.

In their pursuit of a free and democratic Cuba, many of the leaders of this broad-based movement, which comprises the vast majority of Cubans, have made great sacrifices. Those at the forefront of the movement continue to struggle for change despite constant repression.

Here are some of the stories of those currently imprisoned simply because they are willing to struggle for a free, democratic Cuba and a future for themselves, their families, and every Cuban.

Learn about the political prisoners in Cuba and show your solidarity with them by sharing the stories you read and providing them moral and material support!

Liberty is the right of every man to act freely, to think and to speak without hypocrisy.

– José Martí

Injustice anywhere threatens justice everywhere.

– Martin Luther King Jr.

To all those who have not lost the will to resist arbitrary force and lies, may your dreams be fulfilled!

– Vaclav Havel

The right to search for truth implies also a duty; one must not conceal any part of what one has recognized to be true.

– Albert Einstein

Remember those in prison as if you were their fellow prisoners, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering.

– Hebrews 13:3

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

– Romans 12:21

Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression...

– Universal Declaration of Human Rights

I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!

Barry Goldwater
